This home is one of the most significant surviving residential townhouses and dates from the period when the square was becoming one of Philadelphia's most fashionable residential addresses. The house was constructed in 1825, and is best described as a late Federal townhouse into Greek Revival style.
Perhaps the most remarkable chapter in the house's history is its return to the family that once called it home. After spending her childhood within these walls, our client had the rare opportunity to purchase the property back from an owner who had, years earlier, acquired it from her parents. In doing so, she became not simply a steward of a historic Philadelphia single-family residence, but the caretaker of her own family's story.
For Melissa & Miller Interiors, the restoration was approached with both reverence and restraint. Rather than recreating the past, we sought to honor the home's architectural legacy while allowing it to evolve gracefully for contemporary life. Original details were carefully preserved and celebrated, while thoughtful interventions—layered materials, bespoke millwork, collected antiques, and art acquired over decades—were introduced with a light touch. The result is a home that feels deeply personal and quietly sophisticated: a dialogue between memory and modernity, where each room acknowledges the past without becoming bound by it.
There is a particular poignancy in walking through a house that has come full circle. Through the client's stewardship, this early nineteenth-century townhouse has not only been preserved, but reanimated together by Melissa & Miller Interiors with architect Canno Design and builder Orion for the next generation.
